Scientist finds Gulf bottom still oily, dead – Yahoo! News

The entire article ain’t pretty, and doesn’t mention what the EFFECT of this oil covered bottom is on the food chain… worth researching.

“Oil from the BP spill remains stuck on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, according to a top scientists video and slides that she says demonstrate the oil isnt degrading as hoped and has decimated life on parts of the sea floor. That report is at odds with a recent report by the BP spill compensation czar that said nearly all will be well by 2012.At a science conference in Washington Saturday, marine scientist Samantha Joye of the University of Georgia aired early results of her December submarine dives around the BP spill site. She went to places she had visited in the summer and expected the oil and residue from oil-munching microbes would be gone by then. It wasnt.”

Ocean Acidification… One-Stop shopping!

This NOAA website should probably be book-marked as THE go-to site when you need to explain Ocean Acidification to someone.  It’s all about coral calcification folks…

“The ocean absorbs almost a third of the CO2 we release into the atmosphere every year, so as atmospheric CO2 levels increase, so do the levels in the ocean.”

Shark Population Declines Need to be Curbed Now | Conservation International Blog

We’ll say this till our tonsils bleed (without attracting more sharks!)… Shark Finning Sucks.

“The scenario is all too common on fishing boats across the ocean — a shark is caught, its fins are sliced off, and it is dumped overboard to drown. This wasteful and inhumane practice is increasing at a time when shark populations are in greatest jeopardy. As the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization FAO meets in Rome this week to discuss the state of the world’s fisheries, a new report has revealed the dire situation of shark species worldwide. An estimated 73 million sharks are killed every year — largely to meet the rising demand for sharkfin soup, fueled by Chinese markets.”
